I love accent tables. I have many and put them everywhere. Obviously, I think it is very important to always have one next to any chair or sofa...but they can also be used as a decorative element. I have an Asian Garden Stool in my shower. It adds a decorative touch to an unexpected area and it's also quite useful.
Even a chair can be used as a quasi-accent table. I love this chair. I bought two at an auction. My Mother thinks they are horrible...but I think they are "ugly pretty"!
