Closet Makeover...

Monday, March 9, 2009

We are the second owners of our home. We've lived here almost three years. There are some things, of course, that I'm not thrilled with about the house, but mostly I love it. Having just relocated to a new city, I didn't want to go into a major remodeling project, so I primarily made cosmetic changes. The whole house was "Builder Beige"...so repainting every room was my top priority. I had considered ripping out all of the tile floors throughout the house and installing wood floors, but luckily my neighbors talked me out of it. We live in a mountainous desert environment and during the Spring we have continuous winds up to 50mph. Sounds shocking, but it's true. Tile has proven to be the easiest to maintain. Nothing had been done to the outdoor spaces...just dirt and concrete. The first year, after repainting every wall, ceiling, door and all trimwork, we installed a pool, two pergolas, two fountains (I need water...the sound, the smell, the feeling...I am a Pisces afterall!), flagstone and slate patios and pool decking, landscaping and a firepit with a stone bench. I had rustic Mexican gates installed to the front entrance and the side yard entrance. I also designed a railing which was installed all around the backyard areas. I changed all of the outdoor and indoor lighting. Phew! I needed a break. The second year...nothing! We spent the whole year outside in the pool drinking margaritas.
So now we are about to be in our third year. Next on the agenda is our closets, the master bath (maybe), adding a runner to the stairs and recarpeting the upstairs. I've slipped down the stairs more humiliating times than I'd like to count. My housekeeper "Pledges" them. I think she's trying to kill me. She wants to be the next Mrs. Main Man. Our Master Bath isn't the greatest. We have no tub, which is just fucking sacrilegious! The bathroom is very narrow...we bump butts occasionally. The Main Man likes it, but he has a tiny ass...so guess whose ass is typically the transgressor? My fireplace surround needs to be changed and possibly the kitchen remodeled. I have a great kitchen, but it has no character and I would have never picked out Baltic Brown granite.
With the economy in shambles, I'm not chomping at the bit to do all of this in record time. I'm taking baby steps. I'm beginning the makeover on our closets...trying to keep the costs down, so it's strictly cosmetic. Mine is going to be an Asian Jewel Box. The Main Man's is going to be inspired by the Pirelli Calendar. I'm ripping out the carpet and putting in black wood floors which I did in our bedroom the first year here. I'm painting the shelving and cabinets and wallpapering the walls and ceilings...changing out the light fixtures, adding some recessed cans and looking for some small rugs. Mehdi Abedi from Pride of Persia is my Rug Guy. Not only does he have beautiful rugs, he's also a professor at Rice University in Houston. I like my men intelligent!

Hopefully the closets will turn out glam, sexy and too fucking fabulous for words. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Jill,
I hope you share some before and after pics--I love closet makeovers!! I live in a home built in the 70's when closets were considered an extraordinary indulgence! I re-worked my bedroom closet space 2 years ago, and I still feel deprived! Can't wait to see what you do...judy

Yum. I've just seen that last light fixture - where? I love it.

I like my men smart, too. Not just for conversation. In my experience, smart guys are better in bed. *wink*

So, wait, did you keep the dog?

Gorgeous: I kept her. I adore her already, but I literally thought Lola was going to eat her yesterday! All it would take are two good bone crushing bites. Things have calmed down now. Dolce learned to never get in the way of Lola's eating or she will be eaten as well!

The second light fixture is from Vaughn Designs...I'm on the fence about it...still looking.
