Mi Mamacita thinks these are the ugliest chairs evah! I have two of them and I love them. I posted pics of them once before on my Occasional Table post. Me acting stupid with no neck before going to Symphony and CATS - Cocktails after the Symphony. Should be called TWATS - There's Wine after the Symphony...

Fabulous cufflinks from Wendy Brandes...jewelry designer extraordinaire!! After agreeing not to buy each other anything for Valentine's Day, I reneged and bought these for The Main Man...did The Main Man renege and get me anything.....um, that would be NO! Men are so literal.
He just read this and said, "I can't believe you say No and mean Yes..."
Welcome to his World!
Dinner by the Grill...The Main Man set the table...I think I'll keep him!

Mi Mamacita is leaving today...which totally sucks!

The Curious Case of Beatrice Button

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Yesterday was my birthday. I've decided to take a cue from Benjamin Button. From now on...drumroll please........I'm going to start aging backwards! So, this year I am 39. It was a fabulous 39th birthday. My parent's are here visiting. We stayed home all day outside in the sun. The weather was fabulous. We drank Lillet and Soda's all day long. My Mother cooked an incredible dinner...A Chevre, Walnut and Fig spread with toasted croutons, an Apple and Spice Pork Roast served with bacony green beans and cheese grits (I'm a Southern girl after all) and a Chocolate Ganache Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. We drank a Gustavo Thrace Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 with dinner...three bottles for three people. My Dad sticks with margaritas. I got gifts! It was a day all about ME! What more could you ask?!

Fang...my new kitty...it's great blogging about shit, because then I get it!

Tomorrow is my birthday...I'd like this JEAN DUNAND (1877-1942) 'JOSEPHINE BAKER', 1927 Gouache...available for auction from the fabulous collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge February 23 - 25 at Christie's. It's fairly reasonable compared to everything else...so get cracking!

Update: It sold for $71,162.00 and I don't think The Main Man bought it for me, cuz I can't find it anywhere!

Naked Roux

Saturday, February 21, 2009

Yesterday proved to be a great day. I decided to cook...which is rare these days. I flipped open my trusty Brennan's of Houston cookbook and landed on Gumbo YaYa...recipe here. Brennan's is a Houston institution and one of my favorite restaurants...I had my first sazerac there, celebrated many birthdays, feasted at drunken brunches, had one of the first dates with The Main Man. They are in the process of rebuilding after the devastating fire caused by Hurricane Ike. I can't wait to visit once they reopen. I digress...Gumba YaYa is a favorite dish of ours when we visit Mr. B's in New Orleans...where the recipe originated. Browsing the recipe I noticed it called for roux...which I have never made. I was feeling adventurous, so in the spirit of Tim Gunn, I carried on. The recipe makes 16 servings, so we decided to invite our neighbors over for an impromptu dinner party. The roux actually wasn't difficult, just a little scary. The oil has to get really hot. I have several battle scars from my encounter yesterday. I didn't want to burn it...I had just watched Top Chef, and one of the keys to good gumbo is getting the roux really dark...but how dark? I took the picture above with my cell phone and sent it to my friend Chef Bobby Griffing. He called me back and said that it looked pretty good. He asked if there was a "sweater" on the bottom of the pot. A what? Apparently this is chef talk. If you screw up and burn something...the icky mass stuck to the bottom of the pot is called a sweater. My roux was naked, so all was good. It didn't really taste nutty like he said it should, but it didn't have the floury taste still either. I think maybe because I used canola oil instead of butter.

While I was setting the breakfast table, the doorbell rang. I kid you not, I had a flower delivery! How fucking serendipitous was that?!! My friend Luciana is back in business!! She owned the best flower shop called Fiori. She had to sell it due to some personal issues. She has now bought it back and delivered the flowers to let me know that Fiori will again have her creative direction, which it sorely needed!

So, after the gumbo was done, all that was left was to grill some bread and make the rice...

Gumbo YaYa in all it's glory!

This Pinot Gris was a great accompaniment...I was off the Prohibition Train last night! Being a bit tipsy, the conversation veered to sex (as always). We transitioned to great bars around the country and how the best of the best always have naked lady portraits. One in our area is called The Imperial Bar at The Double Eagle. They make the best margaritas! Several naked lady portraits adorn the room.

The Imperial Bar at The Double Eagle
I found this Large Portrait Of a Nude, Oil on Canvas By Dupuy on 1st Dibs while I was browsing the Saturday Sale. I once had black and white photos of me taken for my husband's birthday. I wanted them to be cool and artsy...they were just really cheesy and sad. I've "lost" them.

My Top 5 Albums

Thursday, February 19, 2009
I was tagged by Molly...the musical genius and blogger extraordinaire of Ashcan Rantings. These are the 5 albums I would listen to if I had such a dismal limitation. Only 5...damn, that's hard. Music is such an integral part of my life.

" I Want Your Hands on Me" is my all time favorite song. I'm drawn to her intensity...and I think she's beautiful.

Every song is amazing...Nothing Compares 2 U, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Pink Cashmere...I asked The Main Man if we had a Song, you know, a romantic song that reminds you of the other...he said, "Do Me Baby"...I said, "Now?! We're in the grocery store."

Prince starts to sing this incredibly romantic song at 2:18 in this live concert.

I have quite a bit of racy memories from The Love Below. Andre 3000 is incredible. The whole album tells a story. Where are my Panties always makes me laugh...watch the animated video below. I'm not so crazy about Speakerboxxx. I immediately lost that CD, from this double CD set...although watching my cousin dance with his blissed out smile to The Way You Move always makes me happy.

He's THE MAN...not The Main Man, but THE MOTHER FUCKING HIP CAT I'M YOUR MAN...yessir you are!

Everybody Knows and I'm Your Man are my two faves...

Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik...I could watch Flea gyrate for hours.

Cocks in Socks!

Thanks Molly, this was fun. Fosco, I'd be interested to see what your top five reveal. I hope you haven't already done it in the past.
