The Week in Review...

Jesus, The Carpenter, refinished my front door...
But seriously, I found a great carpenter, painter, handyman. He was punctual, professional, all the things that are so hard to find here in El Paso. Email me if you want his contact info.

The squirrels (which are the size of beavers) are eating all of my tomatoes. Possibly because of the drought. Not only do I have The Main Man peeing around my tomato bed (my mother suggested lion poop...strangely, I do have access to such a thing), but we've bought three owls that I move daily. Seems to be working.

The Senior Citizen who is now cooking almost every day. We were having dinner with friends the other night and The Main Man had the audacity to say that I never cook. What?! Of course, now I feel the need to prove him wrong. I'm at the grocery now almost every day. I've grilled tuna, BBQ'd chicken, pork tenderloin, more chicken, venison...

On another note, some strange lady at the grocery store asked if she could touch my dress (in the pic above)...weirdo.

Ina Garten's Parmesan Chicken...I had to use two separate saute pans. It was worth the trouble of the whole pounding and dredging process. I used panko. 4 minutes exactly on each side. She's right. The difference between the hot chicken and the cold greens is the key.

Beggars...I'm a terrible disciplinarian.

My husband's peacock size 14's...special ordered, newly arrived...they make my eyes bleed.

Duncan Venison found in my freezer...have no idea where it came from. Must have been left over from a Chef Bobby night. Grilled and served with a cranberry bourbon sauce.

Potato croquettes that immediately turned into exploding hash browns.
I'm not sure what I did wrong.

Dinner with friends one night...and watching this house actually starting to resemble a residential office complex.

Hibiscus Flower Tea

(pronounced "ha-mike-ah")

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers
  • 8 cups water
  • 3/4 cup sugar or equivalent amount of sugar substitute

Rinse and drain the hibiscus flowers in a colander.

Put them in a saucepan with 4 cups of the water and the sugar.

Stir and bring to a slow boil, lower heat and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes.

The flowers will have lost their color into the water, which will be a deep red color. Let the liquid cool, then strain it into a pitcher.

Discard the flowers.

Add the rest of the water and stir.

Chill thoroughly before serving.
